Hi OP, I'm late 40s communications generalist/director type who's unemployed and immediately seeking work at a time when (I feel) communications people are expected to be graphic designers, thousands are applying for roles, and I can't seem to get past first or second interview. Do you think I should find a different field, temp, or what I should I do several months in to break through and finally get some money/employment?
Comms is one area massively impacted by AI. Maybe try short and long term contract work? My company used Creative Circle to extend our marketing capabilities. They provide staffing for graphic design copywriting and marketing. As a contractor you would build your profile on their site and join the talent network. I’m sure there are other similar firms too. It could be a way to side gig for the interim. On changing fields - also a possibility and quite honestly may be the way to go. Maybe seek out one of the roles that trains the ai LLMs? (there are several out there these days bc hey someone has to teach it). I’ve seen roles highly specialized like teach ai the basics of 8th grade science, teach ai the basics of instructional design, there might be ones for copywriting marketing and comms. Eventually though ai is coming for anything communications related so yeah it might be time to pivot.
