I’m guessing you are over 60 with your reference to Dick Button (who is deceased and stopped Olympic commentary in 2010). This happens in every sport, there comes a time where the older commentators retire to make way for more recently retired athletes who have more insight into the current state of the sport and are more recognizable names to the audience. Tara and Johnny do a great job. [/quote]

+1. Dick Button and *SCOTT* Hamilton obviously contributed a lot to this sport, but they are from different eras. Tara and Jonny are closer to understanding the expectations and pressures of this era, but even they weren’t part of the quad era. That said, Tara set the tone for triple-triple jump combinations being an expectation, not just a possibility, for women. And Jonny was a pioneer on the artistic/component side for the men, paving the way for Jason Brown. [/quote]

NBC had a more current ice dancer, Olympic champion Gabriella Papadakis, commentating all Fall, but shamefully fired her before the Olympics after her book came out with uncomfortable truths for the powers that be.

Wait, I didn't realize Papadakis had been commentating for them? I guess they didn't want her commentating on her former partner (Guillame Cizeron) who wound up winning gold with his new partner, Laurence Fournier Beaudry. Papadakis describes Cizeron as controlling and their partnership as toxic in her book. And yet that is actually the least controversial thing about the Cizeron/Fournier Beaudry partnership!

I do think it would actually be tough to have a skater so recently retired commentating just because I think she's still be too close to all the competitors. It already annoys me when Johnny drones on about his personal relationships with a lot of the skaters, but at least he's from a prior generation and it's not like he literally skated against the current crop. I think it would be hard for someone like Papadakis to be objective in her commentating, at least of ice dancing, even though it would probably be entertaining to listen to.[/quote]
