There are a few places in the world where I've once been a tourist and randomly picked up some dirt/sand/shells/pebbles to bring home only to find out later via internet that I could have well been arrested and/or heavily fined. I had no idea. Between 20 and 30 years ago.
My BIL routinely sneaks onto Bull Run Battlefield and metal detects at night. He waits for full moons, dresses all in black, carries no phone or ID and uses a red light to avoid detection. He's really dug some awesome things. But he's gonna get caught one day.
I think while I was quickly looking stuff up before posting, I found out that it’s way worse in European countries to do this sort of thing While in the US people sort of dig up arrowheads and the like all the time and it’s just not considered that big of a deal. I guess perhaps because so many “non indigenous” in the US have only “been here” for at best a few hundred years, not thousands of years … but again IDK I also don’t know about civil war stuff, though There’s a super BBC show called The Detectorists which had at least two seasons, it’s charming and lighthearted but their finds can go back 1000s of years and get put in museums and are supposed to belong to the commonwealth
