This is so frightening. I recently had a discussion with my young adult son. He is fully enamored by the technology. I shared an article with him about how Chat GPT had discouraged someone from going to counseling. He laughed it off. I asked if he would trust Chat Gpt over his PCP if he had a medical question and he said “yes”. We had a discussion but who knows if it sank in. It’s a form of brainwashing, IMO.
LOL how are people so dumb about this? ChatGPT is a fancy magic 8 ball. If you tell it all the reasons you don’t want to go to counseling, it will agree with you. If you tell it you’ve solved nuclear fusion, it will congratulate you on your brilliance. If you tell it your husband is amazing, it will list why he is the best. If you tell it your husband is an abusive a-hole, it will suggest that you can do better. It just reflects what you say back at you. If you get “brainwashed” by it, it is because you are a moron. And sorry most 16 year olds are in fact morons so that is a concern. But for an actual adult to be scared of this technology really indicates to me that you either have a loose grip on sanity yourself or have no idea what you are talking about.
Puhleeze…. You are the one we need to worry about.
Because I know a bot can’t convince me to hurt myself?? Ok. 👍
Someone with depression will have disordered thinking and oftentimes cognitive dysfunction so AI regurgitating those aberrations is not a good thing.
But the internet and social media have been harming vulnerable people for a long time. Go look at all of the various reddit subreddits that are basically mentally ill people encouraging each other to indulge in their mental illness. Or the people preying on kids, or porn, or what have you. AI is another source of danger but like another poster said, the internet is just not safe.
