Big colleges just have more spaces and can be more flexible with their admits. UMich also looks for wealthy OOS students, so elite prep schools tend to send a lot of students there. A college like Michigan can admit 30 students/year from a high school because of their size, but Ivies will cap out around 5-7 at elite prep schools, because they want to spread out their admits across the country.
