The Bronx Science thing was an attempt to reassure parents that while he would like to see some reform to the specialized high school admissions process (which could, in fact, use some) he is himself a specialized high school alum and doesn't want to eliminate them altogether like some Democrats (<cough>De Blasio</cough>) do.
Not directed at you. I really don't like Mamdani. But I am also annoyed by the parents who are completely obsessed with what the mayoral candidates and other candidates will do with SHSAT schools. The mayor has almost no control over it. There are these one issue voter groups (like PLACE, which is a nightmare) that ignore everything else. Half these people's kids won't even get in because their parents are too busy whining rather than educating their little snowflakes. I'm a public school parent who turned down a really good SHSAT placement because we visited and it was full of exactly that type of family and my kid wanted nothing to do with it. Mamdani pushed the Bronx Science connection to act like he is a working class product of NYC public schools who is super smart because he went to Bronx Science. All of these outer borough immigrants aspire to have their kids go there so he lived the dream (except for the Asian kids who are considered losers for going there because it means they didn't get into Stuy, which brings great shame on their families). Because no one who supports him has ever heard of Bowdoin (which is a really great school) and it would make him sound like an elitist snob. Meanwhile he didn't go to public schools K-8 even though he likely had very good ones at his disposal living near Columbia. Man of the people my backside.
