The general election is going to be interesting. Usually the Dem nominee automatically wins. I am not sure that will happen this time. I suspect Rs are annoyed with themselves for not having a primary and just giving their nomination to Sliwa. I would have said six weeks ago that Adams couldn't possibly win reelection. Now I wonder. And it is always possible that Cuomo will run in the general election too. Today--Friday--is the last day for Cuomo to get his name off the ballot in the general election. He can drop out later, but if he does his name will be on the printed ballot. At least one of his big money donors is pressuring Cuomo to drop out so it can be one "moderate" vs Mamdani. I think Bloomberg must be stunned. He poured so much money into trying to stop Mamdani. I think Mamdani won in part because voters are just fed up with corruption. And if it's Mamdani vs Adams the same thing may happen. Mamdani may win not because the majority of voters agree with his policy proposals but because he has less baggage than Adams AND ICE is a major issue in this city and the feds have Adams ' cooperation because the charges against him were dismissed without prejudice so Adams won't stand up to the feds. If he wins and he's smart he'll make Lander chief deputy mayor and keep Jessica Tisch as police commissioner. That would calm down the finance bros.
Agree with much of this. I think the power brokers are deciding either that Adams is the guy and better be all in and quit the shenanigans, or Cuomo is the guy and Adams needs to drop out. General election is not ranked choice so splitting the anti-Mamdani vote between Adams and Cuomo hands the election to Mamdani (I actually think Walden is OK but he realistically has no chance and is a wasted vote). I think Trump and ICE are evil. But I don't think Mamdani has the experience, gravitas or credibility to do something about it. Cuomo has the cajones to perhaps stand up and say no. Mamdani acts like this change agent but he has no idea how the game is played and will fold like a cheap suit. That is the problem that all of his worshippers don't recognize. Tisch better keep whatever job she wants. The only downside of this for Mamdani is that he is grooming his successor. She will be an excellent mayor. All of the people who cannot accept her because she is rich really need to get the chips off their shoulders. She is not just helicoptering in and running for mayor. She is rolling up her sleeves and doing the dirty work and learning how the city works and making tough decisions. She could be sitting in Southampton eating bon bons but instead is working hard to make the city a better place. Sorry she isn't ghetto enough for everyone else. Guess what - their guy Mamdani went to Bank Street for K-8 (tuition is now $70k) and Bowdoin for college - he conveniently only mentions Bronx Science. Not exactly raised on the mean streets of New York either.
