People also hire lawyers who understand which way the political winds are blowing and do not take on matters/clients that could hurt their reputations. I have worked in BIGLAW for many years and saw numerous potential matters declined even though there were no conflicts and the client would pay our rates without complaint (or at least no more complaint than any other client).
