Except Chicago is really not like that anymore. The prompts may be, but that’s just another hoop that the soul-sucking strivers know how to go through to get into a top-ranked school. Write weird essays? Check. Pretend you like the Core? Check.

30% of kids major in Econ. (Yes, I know it has always been a great place for Econ, but that proportion has probably tripled in the last generation.) The kids are goal-oriented and it is not the life of the mind place it once was. This is true, more or less, for all top schools. But it is a shame about Chicago.[/quote][/quote]
