Is your son on any medication? I am convinced Zoloft stunted my son's growth. He stopped growing after taking it at age 14. My cousin has four boys. All are over 6 feet tall except one boy who started taking Accutane just after he turned 14. He is 5'7". He never grew much after age 14. I think there are several medications that affect final height that if a boy takes at critical times during puberty and growth spurts surpasses final height.
There are always medications that have warnings about affecting growth. I took one for a long time when I was a kid - I (female) was expected to be no taller than 5'2", and I ended up 5'7". Parents were 5' and 5'8". My brother is about 5'5"; no idea why I'm taller. DH is 5'8", and DS (16) is 5'10" and still growing - he is by far the tallest person anywhere on all sides of the family, despite taking a med that is assessed to affect growth. I think a lot of this is genetics and a crap-shoot. But to the OP - I'd definitely seek a second opinion.
