Word on the street as kids are finding old phones around the house and plan to give those up in the morning while keeping their real phone on their person.
I’m the high school teacher who posted toward the end of last page. I have had a couple kids do this- one kid it was obvious because the phone was so old and busted it was clear that it hadn’t worked since about 2013. I took it and told him to put his real phone in there and never gave the dummy back - I still have it. He’s never been an issue with his phone since. Another kid did it once and I figured it out because at the end of class when there’s 2 minutes til the bell and I let them get their phones, he had one in his hand while a phone was still in his numbered pouch. But a) this means he still kept his real phone away all class which is the goal and b) now I have seen them both and know which one is real and which is fake (they are different colors which is idiotic but these kids aren’t that savvy) so I know which one to make sure he puts in the pouch now. The kids who tried to just put the case in realized the first couple days I wasn’t stupid enough for that to work. I have 100% compliance in my class. Admin even did surprise spot checks the week before break and I had 100% of the phones of the kids who were present in their pouches. It isn’t hard to make this work with consistency and basic classroom management. Most of the times when I walk over after the bell to do the phone check, all the kids already have them in the pouch because they just know it’s the expectation in my room and they WILL be called up by name to put theirs in if I don’t see a phone in the pouch matching their desk number.
