NP.  Not rude.  Just accurate.  If you're going to play the prestige game, you need to have your eyes wide open.  Your late model Accord or Camry is still "more prestigious" than the surplused taxi you could be driving (which, in this analogy would be community college I guess).

You prestige-chasers living in make-believe land wouldn't actually consider the trades for your children, even though this would give them long term job satisfaction and security.  Who's really being rude here?  At least some are being realistic about what we're talking about here, the snob factor.
