Super weird to see this framed in some “aren’t these a bunch of weirdos” language since the Declaration of Independence establishes this as the basis for our collective belief as Americans as to why we should break away from England (“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness“). It’s like a whole generation of Americans has been raised without the concept that our constitution was d structured so that the PEOPLE are telling government how it’s powers are LIMITED rather than the government giving permission to the people about how they can and can’t live their lives. And when I casually questioned my teens if they were familiar with this concept and how we were the First Nation to turn this upside down, they were stunned. It’s like they had never realized it before. So yeah—definitely a rabbit hole. [/quote]
