What is the benefit to playing up to U19 if you are supposed to be on the U16 team?
As a player, you are likely going to be more challenged and may develop more quickly. As a coach, if you think u19 has a better chance of winning you may stack your u19 team with all your top players regardless of age. Players can also play multiple age groups.
Yes, but you're not going to be seen as much if recruitment is your goal. By U19, many in that age range have already been recruited at D1 level (they generally -not always- recruit earlier). Even top D2 and D3 are already recruiting for 2025. For our Tgiving tournament, several U16 top players were asked to "play up" with the U19 teams and declined for that reason. But, if you can play both or don't care about recruiting, then yes, you can be challenged and develop skills by playing up. My 2 cents.
You can also be a u14 and play up to u16 (or u19), giving you more years of exposure. Some coaches don’t like if you turn down an opportunity to play up and it can hurt the player.
