Experience. Acceptances of my own two white kids, albeit from LCPS. Similar numbers.

UVA may depends on course rigor and other intangibles and how they construct class rank (I know FCPS doesn’t rank, but believe be the admissions offices do and UVa wants top 10%). Similar for W&M (although why W&M for business?). VT the supplementals matter but the numbers are a stronger fit. [b]Demonstrated interest with admissions counselor assigned to VT also helps. [/b]

VT says demonstrated interest does not count. The kids applying to VT from DS's high school would fill their auditorium - I don't think the VT regional admissions counselor was taking notes on attendance. [/quote]
I say this with no data at my disposal, just an observation. This is the first admissions cycle in a while that ED is NOT part of the admissions process.  You could argue that demonstrated interest was very important historically with ED and communications describing high stat kids being denied. [b]There also appears to be a surprisingly small number of TJ kids attending considering its the "tech school" of Virginia.[/b] Tech will be very interesting. [/quote]

Tech has routinely been rejecting high stats kids out of TJ to protect yield.. Kids that got into UVA, UMD, UIUC, Michigan, Purdue, Cornell, etc. Word spreads..[/quote]

Not sure.. Other schools have stepped up.. UMD and NorthEastern gave my kid enough money to make the cost come down to about the same as UVA, Purdue doesn't cost that much more that VA instate, etc. and all of these are decidedly better schools that Tech.(saying that as a Tech alum). DP: VT went up in the 2024 rankings because of its focus on accepting students with Pell Grants (they accepted 100% of Pell Grant applicants to engineering for instance--look at their institutional data). This helped them move up in the rankings, but doesn't mean they have improved as an educational institution.  I personally think it's great that they are focused on First generation/Pell grant students--but that does mean there will be less resources available for highly qualified other students.  I also don't think having more Pell Grant students should be a factor in the USNWR or other ratings.  [/quote]

Pell Grants make up only 3% of the USNWR ranking criteria.  This outsized emphasis you and others on DCUM are putting on it is absurd.  VT is an excellent school and is ranked appropriately.  [/quote]

Given that the differences between ranks are often based on hundredths and tenths of points, 3% has an outsized effect -- as you can see in the changes in results.  Look at the actual numbers. VT is a fine school--but that is how it moved up the ranks.  Analyze the numbers and you will see.[/quote]

I have already analyzed the numbers, and frankly, feel that the most recent rankings are more reflective of many of the schools.  Some went up, some went down - and for the most part, I agree with the outcome.  [/quote]

No, not at all.  I think the rankings are overall dumb--and are shown to be even dumber when schools can move up or down 5-20 points based on the number of Pell grant students they admit or other factors that I think are meaningless to the quality of education.  I advocate for the Princeton Review approach which sets a benchmark for schools to be included, provides data on them all, but doesn't rank--or the NYTimes  interactive tool that lets you rank depending on the factors that are important to you.  USNWR and other ranking systems have made higher education far worse.[/quote]
