How is this a “hate bias incident” if the documents were kept private and then deleted? Honestly raising 1st Amendment issues here. It sounds like an offensive joke that was written down by some friends but went no further. Is this a thought crime?
Creating a group, making a slide presentation and having a Google doc sign on a school-owned chrome book - and against LGBTQ students is a HATE CRIME. It is not a 1st amendment right. It was found by a teacher during class. This is highly concerning.
We don’t know any of that. It sounds like it was deleted and somehow recovered as well. This may be misuse of the laptop, but if they didn’t disseminate it, how is it a “hate/bias event” unless merely saying/writing certain words is banned?
Thought crimes are a thing now.
Nope. Thoughts that stay in your head aren't a crime. It's when you inappropriately express them that problems arise. This probably wasn't a crime, but probably was a violation of the student code of conduct: https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/uploadedFiles/students/rights/0851.22_2022-23_STUDENT_Code%20of%20Conduct_WEB.pdf "My words, actions, and attitudes demonstrate respect for myself and others at all times."
Violating the student code of conduct doesn’t warrant a call to the police. I’m sure the kids who get in fights, threaten their teachers, or destroy bathroom fixtures are also violating the student code, but that doesn’t seem to warrant any where near the same level of attention.
