Had a female Golden Retriever during childhood & teen years. Never tied her up. Just let her roam the neighborhood.

On more than one occasion, we had families contact us from different part of town asking if she could spend the night. We let her even though we did know the families.

Many times the local police brought her back in the cruiser. They said that she was wondering around & they liked her companionship so they asked her for ride-alongs.

Neighbor across the street was not a dog person. Had two young female toddlers. While the girls were playing alone (about age 2 & 4) in their unfenced front yard with the fastidious father watching from a second story window while working, a Russian Wolfhound came charging at them to attack. Our 120 pound female Golden reacted swiftly knocking the Russian Wolfhound to the ground within inches of the girls. Our female Golden--Goldens are very protective of children-became ferocious in her chase of the Russian Wolfhound. Never saw the Russian Wolfhound again. Every Friday night for several years, our neighbor tossed our Golden a cooked charcoal grilled steak.

For a few years, our female Golden would lay down in the yard with the neighbor's children while they played. The toddlers could sit on her,play with her tail or ears, or pet her. Goldens are very protective of children.[/quote]
