Is there a scenario in which this medically necessary abortion at birth would actually happen?
No. It was a RW/pro-life scare tactic. If I remember correctly, it gained traction after a Ralph Northam (a pediatric neurologist prior to becoming governor) interview, in which he discussed the hypothetical situation of making a decision regarding resuscitation and/or lifesaving efforts versus just providing comfort care for a baby born with severe health issues, and that decision being made by the mother/parents. I can't remember exact details, but some in the RW/pro-life camp twisted what he said into more nefarious terms.
For being so invested in “God’s will,” the pro-life crowd are heavily invested in pursuing heroic measures on fetuses, no matter how futile. Every other headline on Life News is some variation of “Baby survives despite what doctors said.” They never follow up when said baby dies a gruesome death after months or years of medical torture. I believe all innocent life is valuable and should be cherished, but sometime “God” has made his will abundantly clear and the only humane thing left to do is to honor it.
