Why did Criston Cole snap like that? He would have known Rhaenyra is a princess and he’s just a knight, so she’s not going to run away with him. And why is Alicent so bothered by Rhaenyra not telling her about her sleeping with Criston? She used to be Rhaenyra’s friend and sneakily married her father, the king?!
Because her dad lost his position after Rhaenyra denied it, making him look like a liar to get Aegon into power.
NP. I too don't understand why Allicent is so mad at Rhaenyra, and your explanation doesn't really make sense, because she DIDN'T have sex with Daemon, so Rhaenyra never lied to Allicent. She just didn't tell her "but oh yeah I banged my protector" -- understandable since that could get him killed. In the interviews with the show creators after the episode, they did confirm that Allicent was simply angry that Rhaenyra hadn't told her the whole WHOLE truth, but that seems silly to me in context.
I agree that I didn't get it at the time, but it makes sense - when Allicent was questioning Ser Criston I thought she was accusing him, but she was really trying to get to the truth about what Rhaenyra told her. Why would Rhaenyra's father send her miscarriage tea if he didn't believe the allegations. Then she finds out that not only did Rhaenyra not tell her the whole truth, she risked the life of her guard, and Allicent has a son and daughter to think of, as her father reminded her. Plus, the King firing Allicent's father was not because he didn't believe her father it was because her father wasn't going to cover for Rhaenyra. I don't think this was all particularly well done, but it's definitely the moment where Allicent decides to declares herself on the side of her son over Rhaenyra. That wedding was a mess. You knew from almost the first second that someone was going to lose their ish. I agree that the setup for it being Ser Criston didn't really work for me. Was sad to lose another Joffrey in that way.
