How is it different than braces? People have no problems altering teeth for cosmetic reasons. As far as I know, no one in our family has ever had cosmetic surgery, so I don't care personally but I can see there are some things, like the breast reduction (or a nose job for a nose that is far, far outside the mainstream) that I could agree to for under 18.
Braces don't usually require anesthesia and surgery. And good dental health is important down the road for overall health in general. Crooked, overcrowded teeth actually can cause problems with higher incidence of tooth decay and gum disease. So, they aren't the same, even though straight teeth is also a desired cosmetic trait. I am not against a nose job or other cosmetic procedure and I would say the choice is between the kid and parents if doctors all agree it is safe and reasonable to do at her age.
