Guessing you don't hang at Rio much? I live nearby and I only eat at Rio once-in-a-while - it's pretty expensive. Sure, teachers or families might drop in every once-in-a-while. That will make the after-school parking situation even worse than it is now. If the kid has $20 or $30 to burn on a "cheap" lunch, that's a possibility. Dave and Busters might get a boost - the same way White Flint Mall got a "boost" by attracting fights. If vandalism and theft increases in the communities around Rio, I'm sure that all those families paying half-to-three-quarters of a mil for their townhouses will be overjoyed and thank the board profusely. Sure, you can mess with the schools parents paying extra for their kids education to live in a top notch school district - just expect to have a new board voted in once they're pissed. You tell a parent "yeah, I know you worked hard to pay 3/4 of a mill for your brand-new townhouse but we're turning it into MS-13 High to promote social justice and give your kid a real-world Life lesson" - see how that works out. Same goes with drawing up boundaries that don't make sense or messing with Magnet programs just so, as a hypothetical example, a board member or MCPS admin can do a solid for 'friends and family'. It's corruption and everyone knows it. These are the things MCPS never cares about - they're too busy working their own personal agendas. No matter how many 'for-show' boundary studies are conducted, the Crown boundary map will speak for itself. Crown HS will be a premier example of how MCPS rolls and all eyes are on it.
Somehow it's always about property values. Oh, and parking. Parking and property values.
Actually, it is. This is what adults care about. The number one concern of most DC-Area adults is their mortgage and housing prices, with commuting to/from work a close second. If kids parking around the school streets or block roads to work, the adults get upset. If kids cause vandalism or porch pirate packages after school, the adults get upset. When you mess with matters that affect housing prices, you're messing with that adult's retirement fund, and the adults get upset. If students are bussed from the East side of 270, will there be a line of cars backing up from that direction? Ever make that left-hand-turn from Diamondback from Sam Eig coming from East 270 to the West? What happens if that queue gets long with parents picking up kids on a snowy day? What happens if it backs up all the way to 370? Hmm. Okay, try the other direction - for example, If it affects traffic Shady Grove Road or Key West, for example - where the ambulances need a clear path to and from the hospital? If RM has $6 lunches nearby? Really? That's great! Most cities with large numbers of workers (RM is by the courthouse and downtown Rockville). Not sure where that will happen around Crown HS? La Madeleine has a few things around $8, &pizza around $10. Maybe the kids can hit the Happy Hour snacks or pound down a drink after school with the teachers at Paladar Latin Kitchen and Rum Bar, Ted's Bulletin, Ruth Chris' Steak House, Old Town Pour House or Coastal Flats? Also, dystopian is "relating to or denoting an imagined state or society where there is great suffering or injustice" so it's not the correct word. This is a practical matter of whether MCPS properly planned the school or not - especially in morning / afternoon rush once things are fully back to normal. If they haven't, and just shoot off their mouths about how they're going to shift kids around, it affects real-life. It's a direct correlation - nothing dystopian about it (although that is a really cool big word..).
Except MCPS and MoCo Planning are in a pissing contest just now. Traffic and off site parking are not MCPS's problems any more than overcrowded schools are Planning's problem. And if Crown has open lunches, plenty of shops in Rio will find a way to cater to the students.
Why do you think it's not a MCPS' issue? MCPS makes the decisions and assumes the full responsibility for their actions. If people don't like their decisions, they're free to vote out the board. And all that matters to you is cheap off-site lunch? Hmm.
