Incoming 9th grade girl GDS Maret Potomac Wondering which is better at avoiding groupthink. We all live in a bubble but will one be better than the others in terms of exposing her to ideas that are actually different from those in the bubble? And is one worse?
Because I think this question is really awesome I am going to give you my 2 cents on Potamac. I have a high school kid at Potomac (also had kids at other privates in DC) and I have been very surprised at the diversity of opinions that kid hears from classmates. Coming from DC, and having kids at other top DC privates, I thought Potomac was going to be too conservative and "southern" for my taste but my kid wanted to go to Potomac. Well, I was wrong. We talk about politics, culture, world view in our house and Potomac kid often offers anecdotes form her peers at school. Im always a bit surprised at how diverse the opinons from her classmates tend to be. There seems to be a bit of everything from "Green Party" types, democratic socialists to mainstreem democrats, independents, liberatarians, conservatives and the Trumpies. Best part is they all seem comfortable sharing their views and friendships cross the political spectrum. Just my kid's experience but, its been an eye-opener for me.
