[/quote] You could also argue that if he gave her a vacuum cleaner it didn't mean that he thought the house was dirty. He was just giving it to her because he knew how much she enjoyed taking care of her house. But the point exists that there are a whole category of gifts which are generally perceived as "not very nice gifts to give" because they usually have some implied agenda to them.
