I knew a ton of people that were 'only smoke when I drink' types too. I was thrilled when smoking in bars was outlawed---though by then I was pretty much out of the bar scene. Sigh. I was too young to partake in the scenes you speak of. I had older relatives who were involved in those scenes but my parents would not allow for me go hang out with them because I was so young.
