My D's classmate was deferred at UMich last year so he had to settle for Brown.  It's just yield protection.  UMD knew the student will go elsewhere.  Schools that are considered safes don't appreciate the label - so they will reject out of spite.  Most likely, it was done to protect their yield.  [/quote]

US News is no longer tracking number applied vs % admitted, which should cut down on yield protection to the extent that was happening.
