And then when he inevitably makes a mistake, he laughs about it to the audience? Doesn't he get that the subtext to that, is "haha I can't even be bothered to put my best foot forward for you rubes."[/quote]

Are you the pp?  I am waiting to here there tragic story.  And to answer your question you can see things negatively if you dislike someone and positive things if you do like them.

Haters:  He is showing them contempt by laughing at them!  He can't be bothered to prepare.  What a bore.

Positive:  He made a mistake and is trying to be funny by making fun of himself.  Self-depreciating humor.

Maybe they do but, they aren't expected to do what William has to do.  He had no choice in the matter.  He has to live his life publicly doing this job.  And again, we aren't talking about most people.  If you are the pp it sounded like you had a tragic story.  But, I see you don't.  Prince William and Harry's story is unique in that their mother was shared by everyone.  They had to grieve in public but, with a stiff upper lip. If you have zero sympathy than I say you have no heart.
