Maya is very very popular. Especially is this area. Nina has a very simila ring to Maya, so I'm suprised your DH nixed it. I would try and convince him to go with Nina. And not to start a side discussion with this pp, but I also think Sasha is similar and less popular.
He's a no-go with Nina, and I agree it was weird he didn't like it. He doesn't like a lot of the names that sound like Maya. I also tried Mira and he kept reading it "Myra" and thought it was ridiculous. He gave a VERY odd reaction to Kira. Anyway, the way Nina's been making the rounds on these boards I wouldn't be surprised if it's raising in popularity also. I figure at least I *know* Maya is popular, so I won't be blindsided. When my daughter was born (who is not named Sophia) I didn't know kids named Sophia and have now met a ton of them her age. It was like all of a sudden everyone named their kid the same thing! I've always thought of Sasha as a really cute name, but I grew up in an area that is heavily populated with Russian people, so Sasha is pretty common there, mostly for boys as a nickname for Alexander, and is often the name people use for their dogs. While it doesn't have the same ring here, that's what it makes me think of.
