I think I agree with you. I don't love Madeline's wardrobe but you certainly see why they've dressed her that way. 
Back to NK/Celeste: I didn't love the therapy dress and found it too busy (although I think NK has a model's body and could wear anything well), a pp pointed out that Celeste wears long sleeves and high necklines as she's hiding bruises. [/quote]

Out of curiosity, I went back and looked at all their clothes in the various scenes.  I have to say, the more I look at the dress Celeste wears in therapy, the more obsessed I'm becoming!  It's really lovely and elegant.  And I love how they are dressing Madeline.  She always looks completely put together when she's out, and cute/comfortable at home.  Renata/Laura Dern is soooo skinny, she can wear anything.  And Jane just looks average, as she's supposed to.[/quote]
