There have been many names floated as to "who to blame" here: Facebook, Reddit, the mainstream media, the fake news media, etc.

Up-thread, Jeff does a good job answering what we know about the Comet Pizza rumor and where it first propagated.

But the blame, from what I can tell, lies mostly with 4chan.  Learn about 4chan; what I've learned about it/them is disturbing.  It is a sort of clearinghouse for extremists on the left, right, and simply off the charts wackos.  It's the haunt of "anonymous."
