It's too much too soon, in my experience, the kids who want attention are the ones who start harping on being bi-sexual, gay at this early age. I don't know about your kids but mine are still very sheltered, and yes I do know their friends, check their messages, emails, etc. There is too much being forced on kids too early and the over liberal forcefeeding of every sexual preference needs to stop.
Mom to a 13 yo gay DC. Came out/questioned for the past year. Faced bullying & ostracism from peer group. GSA has been great. It's a safe place where DC knows that there will be acceptance & support. My DC is not an attention seeker. We did not force this on DC. No brainwashing. Also, just so people are clear, the kids who bullied my DC have parents who span the political spectrum, from anti gay-marriage to fairly liberal. Kids are not always reflecting their parents' views. But once kids start with mean-spirited comments, it can take on a life of its own...and I've heard apologist explanations from fairly progressive adults about how it's not really homophobic to be singling a child out for negative comments because of their sexual orientation -- it's just kids being uncomfortable about sexuality in general. It's just a hard age. Hmmm -- try that phrase out with any other bigotry. It's not --ist to single out (think of any other group that Trump's recently targeted) for their group identity -- it's just being uncomfortable about (gender, race, immigration status, etc etc) in general! This is in MCPS, prior to Trump's election. Also, re: the "harping" comment, my DC actually faced that from peers. ie, I'm not homophobic, but could you just stop talking so much about being gay? Would like to note that these friends were not worried about DC constantly rapping, singing Hamilton lyrics, playing -- and talking about -- travel sports, or any other identity-defining behavior. Or their own quite repetitive, age-appropriate attempts to establish their identity. Finally, re: "sheltered children" I had to explain to my 13 yo what "pussy grabbing" was this election. Signed, Liberal Mom in MCPS
