I'm the one that asked, and I actually agree with you.  It drives me nuts that everyone on DCUM does this, and as soon as I posted, I regretted it.  I didn't phrase it well.  I was more trying to express that you don't NEED to have a nickname.  When we were pregnant, everyone asked us what nicknames we'd use for our kids when we tossed out certain names.  And people often told us that "you can't stop nicknames from happening" - like if you name your child William, he will inevitably turn out to be Bill or Will or Billy or whatever and I just wanted to express that is NOT true. I know plenty of Thomases and Daniels and Elizabeths, that don't go by Tommy or Dan or Betsy.

Virginia doesn't *naturally* lend itself to a nickname other than Ginny, I don't think, and I just wanted to let OP know that it's perfectly acceptable to actually call the baby Virginia and to EXPECT OTHERS TO DO THE SAME.  It drives me nuts when people try to force nicknames on other people's kids.
