Ours goes off all the time while we are showering or cooking, despite using the fan and opening all the windows. The detector has been replaced three times, but the problem has to do with the movement of heat through our unit rather than any actual smoke. If we shower for more than 10 minutes or the oven goes above 300 deg, the alarm is triggered. Our building manager told us to take the battery out during the day and just put it back in before we go to sleep!!! I do feel bad if it disturbs or frightens neighbors, but I'm not going to take cold showers, skip using my oven, or risk forgetting to replace the battery to avoid a few minutes of beeping.
So do you think its just your alarm or that everyone else in your building has taken out the battery during the day to not drive their neighbors nuts with the beeping?
It's all 10 units configured the same way that have this problem. Something about the layout seems to funnel heat into the same place in each unit. I know that at least a couple residents completely disabled theirs because they got fined when we had an inspection. I assume at least a few others probably pop their's in and out, but I don't trust myself to remember. If our apartment burns down while we're gone because no one bothers to check the beeping it would be a lot better than if I forgot to put in the battery and my family died of smoke inhalation during the night. I can replace stuff, but not my loved ones.
