Don't overthink the smilies. At the least, it means you don't repulse her and doesn't mind interacting with you. You did mention you're friends, right? I'm married and have a few make friends and if I'm saying something I think is funny or if he did, I'll use a smiley. Do they all think I want to date them now? :) 
Women are more likely to text how they talk. They want to express themselves fully. Most men view it as functional. Judging by my male boss' texts you'd think he was the most curt and dour guy. Actually he's very kind and funny in real life. [/quote]
