While I'd love to do that, if I did that every time someone called out or left early, took vacation or came in late, I'd do nothing but send emails or post notices.  I do tell parents when I am on vacation and who will be in charge in my absence.  [/quote]

Question for you director. For me, the weirdest part of this is not the absence, not even the notification. It's that a volunteer is being left in charge. OP says this is a center with 60 kids. Having a volunteer in charge seems really, really weird to me (above I speculated on possible liability licensing issues.) Your thoughts?

Director back:  I for sure think it's weird that there is a volunteer - but not all centers have an Assistant Director.  In that case, without an Asst. Dir,  I'd specify a teacher to be in charge while I am gone.  And perhaps I'd have the volunteer there to answer the phones and deal with mail, people who knock at the door, to let the FedEx delivery person in, etc.  A teacher "in charge" means that in an emergency, they'll deal - but otherwise they will be in their regular classrooms.  So if it's that the volunteer isn't really in charge, she's just there to take mail out of the box, answer door and take messages, then that would be fine.   [/quote]
