So, people associated with BLM get upset when their group is criticized and accused of inciting violence because a few rogue actors chant disgusting things and some even act on it. But, the supporters say that you cannot paint BLM with such a broad brush because of the actions of a few. That is precisely what Dyson does in this article. He has painted “White America” with the same broad brush. “White America” is prejudiced and blind to the struggles of the black man, according to Dyson. Mr. Dyson has no idea how I was raised, what I was taught, or how I feel as a white person.
I agree. I cannot think of a context where such general attacks on "White America," accompanied by the de rigeur "you (white people) will never understands...," will ever lead to anything other than increased racial strife and antipathy. The rich, liberal and comfortable will defend it - "White America" does not mean all whites, but instead a society where whites generally have enjoyed privileges denied to AAs, etc. But when the rhetoric is as rage-filled and hateful as Tyson's, the distilled version of it that eventually reaches the whites who have led very hard lives and struggled to make ends meet will simply, and not without some reason, view as simply an effort by one minority group to obtain preferential treatment at their expense. Again, that means nothing to the rich New York Times editors, and many of their readers, who are actually the most privileged people on the planet. They have no problem blaming "White America" for all of society's ills. It's like an insurance policy for them, as they'd rather have blacks focus their anger on whites generally than on the bankers and other fat cats who really call the shots in our glorious global economy.
