Talk to the principal, find out how many kids generally go to your school of choice and how many kids are blocking you. If your kid gates 99.9 % but your school sends 5 kids generally to your school of choice... I am assuming this is Prep or Gonzaga, and 6 legacies block you you are sol no matter your test score. But if your kids grade has 1 legacy and you are a top student... You are good to go. It's a political numbers game not a test score game. If you are full pay Prep is desperate for full pay students, Gonzaga is a legacy/athlete issue.
GZ and SJC each had 1000+ applicants for abt 250 spots each, everything matters in competition like that.
You don't understand how admissions works. There are 50+ ADW schools and some Arlington schools feeding into the ADW HS's and they have relationship with the principals. They know that athletes and legacy will outweigh scores when applying, because like you said they have tons of applicants with 99% scores. But they are not going to dis a principal with a strong candidate, unless he has 10 legacies and athletes blocking that child from admission. They can't take everybody but they take a certain number every year from each school.
