We did it a few times and realized we could spend the $4k (rental car, food, etc) and have a great trip we all enjoyed.
It has NOT gone over well, and no amount of explaining makes it any better.
I have offered to buy plane tickets for anyone who wants to see us, since it's 1/4 the cost, and have had no takers.
