It's really not that baffling.  It's an anti-Clinton vote more than a pro-Trump vote.  A vote for Romney or Kasich in the general election is truly a vote for Hillary.  I would vote for Obama before I vote for Hillary Clinton (most of his problems have been those of naive idealism - she's just a lying liar).  However, if the only two candidates possible were Clinton or Sanders, I'd vote Clinton.   However, I think that most Sanders enthusiasts and Trump enthusiasts are closer than the rest of us.  There could be a much bigger crossover of Bernie fans heading out to vote Trump for the same reason I will do so, even though we couldn't be farther apart politically.
