Ooof, the "accents" in Steel Magnolias were theater dialects and were terrible! As someone from the south, the accents made me cringe. I remember Diane Keaton's southern accent in "Crimes of the Heart" was so bad in the trailer that I refused to see the movie. [/quote]

I'm from Georgia and what always weirded me out was how bad Julia Roberts' accent is in Steel Magnolias... AND SHE IS FROM GEORGIA! [/quote]

If you know anything about acting classes, you'll know one of the first things they have you do is walk across the room. All of a sudden it's really hard to "act" like you're walking. More than half the people in the class will trip at this acting exercise. So my guess, based on that, Is that Julia tried to "act" with a Georgia accent, rather than just ... speaking as if she was home. [/quote]
