It is worth it. Excellent math, science and computer science curriculum and excellent teachers. Avoid taking Spanish in 6th grade at TPMS.
My daughter took Spanish in the 6th grade and loved it. Maybe theyvve changed teachers.
The problem isn't the 6th grade class, it's if they start in 6th then they will be taking 8th grade Spanish 3 at TPMS. There is one teacher for this class and she teaches it like its Spanish 99, not Spanish 3. She is harder than any Spanish teacher at any other school in MCPS both middle school and high school. If you start a year later than your child will avoid this nightmare. Spanish 3 is drastically easier at Blair or any home high school or middle school. She really screws the highly gifted magnet kids GPA.
I think it depends on the kid's interest level. My child liked Spanish 3 at TPMS. I agree that it was probably a high level class because dc reported being bored with Spanish 4 at Blair. If your think your child will like foreign language then let them take it in 6th and if they love it they can take it through high school and get to the interesting things at higher levels. If you don't think ypur child will be particularly interested you may want to wait a bit. Keep in mind the conventional wisdom is that high schools want to see 2 years of foreign language in high school (even if you jave high school credits from middle school). However, the IB program at Richard Montgomery has a foreign language requirement for admission, so if that's something that interests your child you need to factor it in.
