Happy Birthday! And I say, make something special of it for yourself. My birthday is in the middle of December and it's always an afterthought because we are all busy getting ready for the holidays. This year, I made my own cake and cooked a dinner I wanted. I didn't want to go out to dinner. I did make my family sing happy birthday and blew out my candle. I don't normally do this, but hey, it's my birthday! Just treat yourself well -- it doesn't have to be something big or splashy.
I do this too, make my own cake, and this year didn't feel like going out to eat, so made what I like for dinner - lamb chops and butternut squash with sliced tomatoes on the side. Very yummy. And my cake was sour cream cheesecake with cherry pie filling on top and whipped cream of course! My kids and dh did buy me gifts though. I just don't trust them to do the cooking.
+1 I think DH has remembered to do something on my birthday twice in our 12 years of marriage. Now with little kids, it's a lot harder to plan anything and he's not really good at that stuff anyway (I'm the one making cakes and buying gifts for everyone else!). I don't need gifts, but the kids usually remember and make some little adorable crafts or a drawing for me. My advice is: make/buy yourself a nice at-home dinner, and make/buy yourself some fun cupcakes or a cake and take some photos with your lovely family so you can remember this year. That's the whole magic, right there. MAKE it a memory, even when everyone is tired and holidayed out :) Hope this year is a good one for you, OP!
