We've been good friends for a long time so seems wrong to avoid discussing. I envision I am going to pull away over this.
Please do pull away. No one needs friends who are as high maintenance as you. Yes, I have two young children. I am the only driver in my family, so I have to do all of the pickups. If I have an issue, especially if I am out of town and I have someone who is my emergency contact who does me the favor of picking up my children (whether or not they owe me any favors or recompense over a loan), I am GRATEFUL that they are helping me out. If they fail for whatever reason, I am still grateful for them. I try to determine whether it was an avoidable accident (traffic, personal emergency of her own, job issue). If it was, I accept her apology and give her another chance. If it isn't, I still accept her apology and then find alternative backup transportation for my children. Either way, I accept that my children were my responsibility and take appropriate action. Either way, I don't change my friendship with this person over this. For me, my friendship with this person and my reliance on them as alternative transportation are separate. If you make your friends have to do favors or work for you in order to prove their friendship, then you would be a better friend to distance yourself and let them go. No one needs friendship that comes with strings.
