For every one of you exasperated by irritating and obtrusive inlaws, there are some of us hurt by inlaws who don't give a s***. My DH's dad, brothers and SILs have yet to ask me how I and my DS are spending Thanksgiving and Christmas this year - even though my military DH is overseas on operations and both my parents are dead. I have made arrangements - which I'm actually really looking forward to. But it would be nice if they even only inquired into how we are coping. That said, it would also have been nice if they remembered to send just a card to my DS on his birthday (his dad was away for that too). I continue to send cards and gifts to FIL and their kids, so it's not like there's no communication between us.
I'm sorry you are experiencing this neglect, OP. That sounds difficult and unfair. But your experience on the "there should be more contact" end of the spectrum does not negate the very real difficulty some of us go through on the "there should be far less intrusiveness" on the other end of the spectrum. We can all offer empathy and support to each other, and allow each other space to vent, without saying "you're problems aren't valid because my problems are different and difficult."
