Well, I like it.

As for the neighbor, she knows something is going on.  She says so.  She sees people packing for the hills.  She's probably seen media coverage of the crowds downtown.  And, I really believe, in some sort of outbreak/crisis (even w/o zombies) it would be everyone for themselves.  So, this is believable to me.
