It's so flattering that you think that I was the one for you. While I did care for you, I've moved on and am deeply in love with my husband and very happy with my life. Not only am I not interested in an affair with you, I'm really not interested in continuing this discussion. If you can't get past the thought of us as a couple, then we'll need to stop communicating at all, because I'm not interested in repeating myself so many times that we do not have and will not have a romantic relationship.
NO, NO, NO! All of this is so wrong and will just encourage him, because he thinks he can convince her. And it's sure as hell not flattering. All he will hear is she's flattered, and she wants to keep the connection. This has nothing to do with her. He's unhinged. Healthy grown-ups don't act like this. OP, I had the same thing happen to me. I was contacted by some nut job I had dated for a few months 20 years ago. It's creepy and wildly inappropriate for someone to pursue you like this. Follow the advice of other PP's and cut all contact. If you feel you must respond or he somehow catches you off-guard (my weirdo tracked down my work number and called me one day), you say something like, "I have nothing more to add to this conversation. Please do not contact me, again, as I feel uncomfortable with your persistence in trying to make contact." Resist the urge to say anything else. Do not apologize, do not overstate it, because he will pick apart your words and turn them around.
