The reason folks are asking for details is because they matter here. "DIL is strongly pro-spanking and hits the kids all the time." Is a very different lie from "DIL has a degree in art history." You asked us what we think and we just don't have enough info to even begin to be insightful here.
Right. You said "outrageous." What has your MIL said that's outrageous? It's weird that you won't give some examples.
How about something like, if the DIL has a physical illness - serious and debilitating, but not deadly. Obviously not contagious, due to the nature of the illness, it would be known to any lay person that it is not contagious. It would not make sense for DILs particular illness to ever be considered contagious. It is glaringly obvious. MIL claimed that DILs illness was contagious (MIL making as ass out of herself in the process, as whomever she chose to speak to about it, questioned her and the legitimacy of what MIL was claiming). MIL then proceeds to make up false illnesses and false drugs that DIL has allegedly (but never) taken - going off on a tangent about how DIL has back issues and is addicted to pain meds. Except that there were no back issues, and there were definitely never any pain meds (DIL has adverse reactions to most OTC pain meds, and the non-contagious illness can not tolerate pain meds - the pain meds would be detrimental. A fact also known by most laypeople, if they knew anything about the parts of body affected in DIL). MIL and SILs have had hepatitis and other contagious illnesses, so perhaps they are hypersensitive, or perhaps they have had drug addictions? Perhaps MIL is deflecting, or trying to otherwise draw away from (MILs) negative health experiences, onto DIL, in a rather sick (pardon the unintentional pun) way? Would you be offended if you MIL made up health issues you did not have and drugs you did not take? I would certainly think so. This could all be "repayment" for DIL not allowing MIL into birthing room, as DIL allowed ONLY DH in the birthing room; and frankly, the idea of MILs camera in DILs vajayjay while DIL was trying to give birth would have been impalpable, to say the very least. Alas, everything is about MIL, and if MIL has no news to give, because DIL never sees her (a wonder, no?), why *wouldn't* MIL make news up, of her own accord?! :sarcasm:
