I agree with the idea that while $150 seems like a waste for an alternate flight, it's not that much to put into a serious athletic pursuit, which is really what they'd be doing. And it sounds like the guy routinely travels to races, so I'm guessing that they're not scrambling for pennies. Somewhere in there there's a solution that will work for both of them.
