$200 seems fair. $10 per day.
$200 is what I initially offered but then she needs someone to watch her kids, which would cost her $~$80 a month otherwise, so we were trying to adjust. Maybe $160 - $40 a week? Any suggestions for ground rules/contract language I should use? We aren't doing an official contract but I just want to have set up what to do for sick days, dr appts, changes, etc.
You are going to have to suck it up and drive your own kids some days. Teachers get sick a lot and take a lot of days off for their own kids. Plus all those teacher work days she has to go in to work and your kids have to stay home. So she isn't responsible for any of those things, you need a backup plan. I wouldn't deduct her pay for any of the above events unless she is like sick all week, then skip paying for the week. But if she is sick Tuesday I would suggest pay her the normal amount you agreed instead of adjusting it by 80%.
We know we'll have to drive sometimes and that's fine. We just cant commit to every day. I wouldn't deduct for a sick day or holiday but probably wont pay the week of winter break, or other full week of vacation/no driving.
