We owe just $60,000 on our mortgage and it will be paid off in 30 months. We have enough money in savings to send our teenagers to college without loans. We have $1.6M in retirement savings. If disaster hits tomorrow, we are going to be ok. We have worked towards this for many years with zero help from our families. It is a relief to be in this place.
My DH and I totally want to be like you and your spouse!!!!! The first car I ever bought (3 years ago, the year of model and all! And I'm 34 years old! LOL!) will be paid off in January... as will my student loans from grad school! I'm super excited because that'll be another $400 total going RIGHT into investments/savings (we already max out our TSP and 401K and save as much as we can. We don't have kids yet but we want to move a little outside of the city so we can have some more space!) :)
