I would love for my folks to move out here from Ohio, but they would never pay 500k for a place. Probably not even 300k.
I'm in the same situation, sadly. My parents live in a nice, large 3 bedroom, 2 full 2 bath house with a good deal of property, a very short walk to the lake where they can take out their kayak, and they have a full finished basement with a kitchenette and a full bar. Very safe neighborhood, schools are OK but good enough for most, and for all this they paid about $215k 2 years ago. They come here to visit and talk about how there's so much to do, they marvel at all the grocery stores (they have basically 2 options other than Target and Wal-Mart), they ride Metro and go to the waterfront in Alexandria, but then they're like, "so much traffic, too many people, why does this Home Depot have a parking garage, this is awful." :?
